- Walter Sickert discussing Spencer Gore
Spencer Gore was a founder member of the Fitzroy Group in 1907, of the Camden Town Group in 1911 (of which he was the first President), and of the London Group in 1913. His influence on British painting in this period was considerable, not least on the work of his close friend Walter Sickert who said 'it is my practice that was transformed from 1905 by the example of the development of Gore’s talent'. Gore looked to the new artistic innovations in France, particularly the work of Cézanne and Derain, and assimilated them into his own work. In 1914 Gore died of pneumonia aged only 35, leaving a hugely significant artistic legacy.
